Stories written under emerald skies

Watching the aurora arc ignite above Hvalfjordur while hearing Gudrun explain the science felt both intimate and cinematic. The photos arrived before breakfast.

Marcus and Leyla, London

Their team moved locations three times with zero stress for us. Even the heated camera batteries and wool layers were ready. We just held hands and stared up.

Ava and Chloe, Toronto

As a photographer I feared group tours. This was different. Tripods waiting in the snow, a guide calling out KP values, and volcanic soup simmering nearby.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to travel?

Our season runs from late August through mid-April. September and March offer a balance of darkness and mild weather, while winter months bring longer aurora windows and snowy landscapes.

What if the forecast changes?

We position daily using magnetometer data, GOES satellite feeds, and a network of remote weather stations. If conditions are unfavorable we pivot to a new route or reschedule, and our no-lights promise protects your investment.

Can we request a private departure?

Yes. While our nightly tours are intimate, we also craft private charters with custom pickup windows, celebratory menus, and extra photography time—just mention it in your inquiry form.

What should we wear for a winter aurora night?

Dress in breathable layers, thermal socks, and waterproof outer shells. We provide heated vehicles, blankets, and hand warmers, but proper boots and gloves make the viewing stops far more comfortable.

Is hot chocolate really included?

Absolutely. Every departure features Icelandic hot chocolate prepared on site, and Superjeep guests often enjoy a bonfire ceremony with extra toppings and warm pastries to keep spirits high.

How do we receive our photos?

Our photographer delivers a curated gallery the next morning. Simply reply to your confirmation email or write to info@reykjaviknorthernlights.is and we will send a download link with your edited shots.

Can we rebook if the weather shifts?

Yes. If the forecast changes unexpectedly we offer complimentary rebooking on the next available departure or provide a credit toward a private chase. Your concierge will confirm options before 17:00 on tour day.

What makes the Superjeep tour special?

Our Superjeeps are purpose-built for Icelandic highlands, with 44" tires, onboard gear dryers, and a maximum of 14 guests. This lets us reach darker, remote spots far from light pollution for more dramatic aurora backdrops.

Why is Icelandic storytelling part of the experience?

Aurora legends are woven into Icelandic culture. Our storyteller guides share tales of trolls, elves, and Viking navigation during stops, turning the scientific chase into a memorable cultural moment.
